Van het oude kasteel rest er enkel nog een imposante heuvel of motte. Het oorspronkelijk houten gebouw werd in de loop van de 12e eeuw vervangen door een stenen donjon. Die was omgeven door twee omwallingen en grachten van 20 tot 25 meter breed.
Het mottekasteel toonde de macht van de graven van Henegouwen. De burcht werd bewoond tot 1434, toen de laatste heer van Bever overleed. Hierna verviel alles in puin. Anno 2010 grazen hier vredige koeien. Toch gaf de grond enkele geheimen prijs. In 1964 werden heel wat restanten blootgelegd. Deze kan je bekijken in het streekmuseum te Halle.
