Aalst is de op een na grootste centrumstad in de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en de naar inwonertal vijfde stad van Vlaanderen. De stad is één van de dertien centrumsteden van Vlaanderen. De stad telt ruim 88.000 inwoners , die Aalstenaars worden genoemd. De plaatselijke benaming van Aalst luidt Oilsjt. Aalst staat vooral bekend om haar carnaval. Sint-Maarten is de patroonheilige van de stad. Aalst is gelegen aan de rivier de Dender en behoort toe tot de Denderstreek. De stad is onder meer bekend voor haar carnaval en als vestigingsplaats voor: Tereos Syral, Jan de Nul, de Vlaamse Belastingdienst en Stokerij Van der Schueren. Aalst is ongeveer 25km verwijderd van Brussel en ongeveer 30km van Gent. De Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek stroomt door Aalst.
