Jean-Marie Gaspar (Arlonese dierenbeeldhouwer, 1861-1931) vond na een nachtelijke wandeling in het Ardense woud, de inspiratie om dit burlend hert, “De roep van het woud», te beeldhouwen. Van het oorspronkelijke plaasteren afgietsel werd in 1927 een bronzen versie gegoten. Een uitvergrootte versie staat sinds 1913 in het perk. J.M. Gaspar werd geboren in Aarlen in 1861 en stierf in Brussel in 1931. Op 18jarige leeftijd ging hij als leerling werken in het atelier van de Brusselse beeldhouwer Jef Lambeaux. Hij nam deel aan verschillende tentoonstellingen waaronder de Wereldtentoonstelling van Parijs in 1889 waar hij een medaille won. Zijn jeugdwerk bestaat voornamelijk uit romantische beelden. Op latere leeftijd specialiseerde hij zich in het beeldhouwen van dieren.
