De bouw van het huis werd toevertrouwd aan Victor Horta door Armand Solvay, de zoon van Ernest Solvay. Het gebouw is een van de meest opmerkelijke creaties van Horta, opgetrokken in een van zijn creatiefste periodes .Victor Horta beschikte over voldoende financiële middelen en kreeg van zijn opdrachtgever carte blanche.
