Volgens de legende raakten de inwoners van het gehucht in de vroege Middeleeuwen het niet eens over de plaats waar de kerk moest staan. Ze lieten dan het lot beslissen. Ze volgden twee vechtende beren en op de plaats waar de ene beer de andere doodde, werd besloten de kerk te plaatsen. Vandaar de zonderlinge plaatsing van de kerk aan het uiteinde van het dorpsplein en niet in het midden, zoals gebruikelijk. (oorsprong van de naam : Ber= beer, laer: open plek in het bos). In het plaatselijk dialect wordt de plaats als Balder uitgesproken.
