Según la leyenda, los habitantes del pueblo no se pusieron de acuerdo sobre el lugar donde debía estar la iglesia en la temprana Edad Media. Entonces dejaron que el destino decidiera. Siguieron a dos osos peleando y en el lugar donde un oso mató al otro, se decidió colocar la iglesia. De ahí la extraña ubicación de la iglesia en el extremo de la plaza del pueblo y no en el centro, como es habitual. (Origen del nombre: Ber = oso, laer: claro en el bosque). En el dialecto local, el lugar se pronuncia como Balder.
