According to legend, the inhabitants of the hamlet in the early Middle Ages could not agree on the location of the church. They let fate decide. They followed two fighting bears, and at the spot where one bear killed the other, it was decided to place the church. Hence the peculiar position of the church at the edge of the village square and not in the middle, as was customary. (Origin of the name: Ber = bear, laer: clearing in the forest). In the local dialect, the place is pronounced as Balder.
