In Okegem bij Ninove ontstond het gedachtegoed van de daensistische beweging. Dat is geen toeval, want hier bestond al sinds de jaren 1880 een georganiseerde stroming van christelijke Vlaamsgezinde en antisocialistische middenstanders en intellectuelen. De leden noemden zichzelf de Roelanders, naar hun weekblad Klokke Roeland. Boon beschrijft hoe Pieter Daens en de Roelanders elkaar voor het eerst ontmoetten in april 1893 in een 'kelderkamerke' van een kleine herberg aan het Okegemse station. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst werd de Christene Volkspartij gesticht. Pieters broer, priester Adolf Daens, werd later het boegbeeld van de beweging.
