Westrozebeke is vooral gekend omwille van de Slag bij Westrozebeke (1382), waarbij de Vlamingen een verpletterende nederlaag ondergingen tegen de Fransen. Volgens de legende zou een rode draad rond het dorp de bewoners echter hebben beschermd tegen het oorlogsgeweld. Deze draad was op zeven plaatsen bevestigd, waarnaar tegenwoordig nog de zeven kapelletjes aan de Ommegang verwijzen. Sinds deze veldslag werd de verering van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Rozebeke zeer populair.
