Westrozebeke es especialmente conocido por la Batalla de Westrozebeke (1382), en la que los flamencos sufrieron una aplastante derrota ante los franceses. Según la leyenda, un hilo rojo alrededor del pueblo habría protegido a los habitantes de la violencia de la guerra. Este hilo estaba atado en siete lugares, a los que hoy en día aún hacen referencia las siete capillas en la Ommegang. Desde esta batalla, la veneración de Nuestra Señora de Rozebeke se ha vuelto muy popular.
