Westrozebeke is mainly known for the Battle of Westrozebeke (1382), during which the Flemish suffered a crushing defeat against the French. According to legend, however, a red thread around the village protected the inhabitants from the ravages of war. This thread was affixed at seven places, which is still referenced today by the seven chapels along the Ommegang. Since this battle, the veneration of Our Lady of Rozebeke has become very popular.
