Eksel is een dorp in de Belgische provincie Limburg en een deelgemeente van Hechtel-Eksel in de Kempen.
De eerste vermelding van Eksel is uit 714, als Ochinsala, de basisbenaming van het gehucht Hoksent aan de rivier de Dommel. Met Ochinsala wordt vermoedelijk bedoeld 'de woonplaats van Oko': een samentrekking van de persoonsnaam Oka/Oko en van sala dat zaal, woonplaats betekent . In de 11e eeuw wordt Eksel vermeld als Ekinsala en in 1153 is sprake van Hecsele, een mogelijke samentrekking van agnis en lauha .
