De Distellaan is de belangrijkste oostwestas van deze badstad. Ze loopt evenwijdig met de zeedijk. Hier zijn dan ook verschillende appartementsgebouwen en villa's terug te vinden die Westende mee vorm gaven tijdens de opkomst van het kusttoerisme. Daarnaast is de Distellaan ook al een eeuw lang de thuis van hotels en allerlei winkeltjes.
De straat verbindt als het ware twee tennispleinen met elkaar: dit van de Priorijlaan (oost) en dit van de Franselaan (west). Tennis was, naast golf, een van de belangrijkste tijdverdrijven bij de rijkere toeristen.
