Reeds in 1105 stond op dezelfde plaats aan de Leie een kapel, opgericht door de Sint-Baafsabdij. Deze abdij was in die tijd in competitie met de Sint-Pietersabdij, de andere Gentse abdij die in het stadscentrum de toenmalige Sint-Janskerk en de Sint-Niklaaskerk had laten optrekken. De huidige kerk in laat-gotische stijl werd begonnen in 1440 en in feite slechts in 1825 afgewerkt.
