Waar nu het Meer van Keerbergen ligt lag vroeger een vliegveld voor sportvliegtuigen. Het werd tevens als militair vliegveld gebruikt tijdens WOII door de Duitsers. Het vliegveld lag er van 1932 tot 1963. Het vliegveld verdween echter en door de uitgraving van de zandgrond ontstond het huidige meer van Keerbergen, dat 12 hectare groot is. Er is een verhaal dat twee Duitse soldaten begraven zijn die neerstortten in de buurt. Maar dat verhaal klopt niet. Ze liggen begraven op de Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats in Lommel.
Het verhaal kwam uitvoerig aan bod in het Canvasprogramma Publiek Geheim en Mysteries van Vlaanderen.
