Op de binnenplaats van het stadhuis herinnert een executiepaal aan de gruweldaden die zich hier tijdens WO I afspeelden. Zeker vier soldaten verschenen hier voor het vuurpeloton. In de aanpalende politiecellen werden aanvankelijk soldaten opgesloten die zich zonder toelating op straat begaven, dronken waren of bij vechtpartijen waren betrokken. Vanaf 1916 werden de cellen ingericht als ‘dodencellen’, waar de veroordeelde soldaten hun laatste nacht doorbrachten. Bij dageraad vonden deze soldaten hier de dood door executie (shot at dawn).
