Un poteau d’exécution érigé sur la cour intérieure de l’hôtel de ville rappelle les atrocités qui ont eu lieu à Poperinge durant la Grande Guerre. Au moins quatre soldats ont été fusillés devant le peloton d’exécution. Au début, les soldats qui sortaient sans permission, qui étaient soûls, ou impliqués dans des bagarres, étaient enfermés dans les cellules de police adjacentes. A partir de 1916, ces dernières ont été aménagées en « cellules des condamnés » dans lesquelles les soldats condamnés passaient leur dernière nuit. A l’aube, ceux-ci étaient exécutés (« shot at dawn »).
