De vismarkt werd in 1745 overgebracht naar de Braamberg, een plein tussen de Groene Rei en de Braambergstraat. Voordien werd de vis verkocht op de Markt. De marktplaats werd pas in 1820-1821 overdekt met een neoclassicistisch gebouw, naar ontwerp van stadsarchitect Jan-Robert Calloigne. Een dubbele colonnade van 126 Toscaanse zuilen zonder basis omsluit een rechthoekig binnenplein. De hoger opgetrokken inkompoort met tongewelf vormt de enige onderbreking in de zuilenrij.
