De Universiteit Gent of UGent is een universiteit in België, gelegen in de Oost-Vlaamse stad Gent.De universiteit werd gesticht onder Koning Willem I, als gevolg van zijn politiek om de intellectuele achterstand van het zuiden van zijn Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, het latere België, weg te werken. Net zoals de noordelijke Nederlanden kregen de zuidelijke Nederlanden drie rijksuniversiteiten: in Gent, Leuven en Luik.
