Erosie veroorzaakt opbrengstverliezen en leidt op langere termijn tot een minder vruchtbare bodem. Bovendien veroorzaakt erosie jaarlijks modderoverlast op wegen en in woonwijken en kan het leiden tot dichtslibbende waterlopen, verstopte riolen en vervuild oppervlaktewater.
