Wist je dat de Vlaamse meester Hugo van der Goes aan het einde van zijn leven aan een zware depressie leed? Op een terugreis uit Keulen in 1482 stortte de kunstenaar in en verklaarde zichzelf verdoemd te zijn. Hij deed een mislukte zelfmoordpoging. Zijn metgezellen brachten hem terug naar het Rood Klooster (nabij Brussel) waar hij werd behandeld met muziektherapie. Na een kort herstel stierf hij niet lang daarna.
De mentale inzinking van Hugo van der Goes werd pas in 1863 herontdekt en inspireerde de romantische Belgische schilder Emile Wauters om zijn schilderij uit 1872 te maken: "De waanzin van Hugo van der Goes (Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België).
