De Katholieke Universiteit van Mechelen was de voorloper van de KU Leuven, en bleef slechts voor één jaar in Mechelen gevestigd alvorens definitief naar Leuven te verhuizen.
De universiteit werd op 8 november 1834 opgericht door de bisschoppen van België, volgens een brief van Paus Gregorius XVI gegeven op 13 december 1833. De eerste rector was priester Pierre François Xavier de Ram. Op 1 december 1835 gingen de Belgische bisschoppen in op een uitnodiging van het stadsbestuur van Leuven en verhuisde de Katholieke Universiteit naar deze stad, waar net de Rijksuniversiteit was afgeschaft.
