Het is niet zeker wanneer er voor het eerst sprake is van Berchem. Volgens de legende zou in het begin van de 8ste eeuw Willibrordus, bisschop van Aartsbisdom Utrecht, het kleine dorpje Berchem bezocht hebben. Hij bouwde er een bidkapel. Willibrordus is nu de patroon van de parochie. De VTB richtte voor ,,Sint-Willebrord’’ in 1962 een monument op.
Laatgotisch koor en kruisbeuk (1486-1516) van de kerk, alsook de altaren, preekstoel, biechtstoel, orgel, graftombe van Marie-Anne van Berchem (1663), zijn beschermd sedert 1953. Een reeks kraagstenen, met engelen en wapenschilden, dateren uit de jaren rond 1500. De toren en de voorgevel daarentegen kwamen pas in 1850 tot stand. Het interieur groepeert verschillende stijlen, voornamelijk barok. Maar bijvoorbeeld de 23 kleurrijke glasramen (van L.C. Crespin) werden pas in 1950-52 geplaatst.
Naast de kerk is de rode beuk, met een kroon van 35 meter, al sedert 1949 als monument beschermd.
