In de noordelijkste uithoek van onze gemeente, tegen de Nederlandse grens, ligt het bosrijke Postel met zijn imposante abdij die al in de twaalfde eeuw opgericht werd. Het zijn de norbertijnen die er sinds die tijd de streek ontginnen en gastvrijheid hoog in het vaandel dragen.
Vanwege hun witte pij noemt men ze ‘witheren’. Ze doen aan bosbouw, landbouw en veeteelt. Om in hun eigen onderhoud te voorzien brouwden ze bier en maakten ze kaas. Ondertussen is dit uitgegroeid tot een ware, ambachtelijke industrie. Eentje waar de toeristen maar al te graag op afkomen. Hoe druk het er ook mag zijn, eenmaal binnen de abdijmuren overvalt je een merkwaardige rust.
