Verscholen in natuurgebied De Maat stond ooit het kasteel Van Eetvelde. Edmond Van Eetvelde was eind negentiende eeuw staatssecretaris van Congo. In 1910 liet hij hier een kasteel optrekken. “Als rechterhand van koning Leopold II heeft hij het leven van miljoenen mensen op zijn geweten”, zegt Dré. “Dat is niets om trots op te zijn.” Het kasteel werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog verwoest door de Duitsers en daarna afgebroken. “De geschiedenis is niet fraai, maar het kasteel op zich moet prachtig geweest zijn”, toont Dré op een oude afbeelding. “Het had zelfs een watertoren waarin het regenwater werd bewaard om te hergebruiken in de badkamer.”
Vandaag resten alleen nog de voormalige bijgebouwen van het kasteel. Die werden omgevormd tot jeugdcentrum De Maat.
