Het Steen is een beschermd momument in Vlaamse renaissancestijl. Pieter Paul Rubens kocht het slot in 1635; het was in de Spaanse bezettingsjaren erg verwaarloosd geraakt. Hij bewoonde het kasteel met zijn jonge echtgenote Helena Fourment die hem 5 kinderen schonk. Op het slot in Elewijt werden vermaarde bijeenkomsten van kunstenaars gehouden onder wie Jordaens, Van Dijck, Teniers. De eerste titel die op Rubens' graf in de Sint- Jacobskerk in Antwerpen staat te lezen is "Baron van Steen".
