Description

Het Groot Schijn is een voor Antwerpen belangrijke rivier. Voor ze de stad binnenstroomt komen heel wat zijbeken erin terecht. Het Rivierenhof is het laatste stuk waar het Groot Schijn nog een min of meer natuurlijk traject volgt. Vanaf de wijk Ten Eeckhove, nabij de Ring, verdwijnt de beek ondergronds. Tot voor enkele jaren stroomde ze dan in kokers in noordelijke richting, maar recent heeft men deze rivier aangesloten op het Lobroekdok en Albertkanaal met een pompgemaal. Ter hoogte van het Rivierenhof stroomt de beek op een overgang tussen leem- en zandgronden. De natte zandvlakten, in combinatie met de parkinrichting, zijn het leefgebied voor soorten die op de grens tussen open en beboste zones voorkomen zoals het oranjetipje, een vlinder die zijn eitjes legt op pinksterbloem en look-zonder-look. Wat betreft vegetatie zijn bijzondere soorten o.a. knolsteenbreek, pijptorkruid, en reuzezwenkgras.
