De Grote Markt is er voor de standing en voor de toeristen, voor de politici op het Schoon Verdiep en voor iedereen die gelooft dat Brabo Antigoon versloeg. De Groenplaats is het echte plein van de sinjoren. 'De vorst der Antwerpse schilders' is de belangrijkste bewoner. Een standbeeld van Rubens staat sinds 1843 midden op het plein. Een 'komiteit' belast met de oprichting ervan had hiervoor zeven jaar nodig en eindigde met een berg schulden. In Rubens' tijd was het hier niet zo gezellig. Toen was dit het Groot Kerkhof, later Groen Kerkhof genoemd. Rubens' standbeeld kwam in de plaats van een groot kruis dat bovenop het graf van een bisschop stond, die werd in de kathedraal herbegraven.
