Rubens was een collectioneur en liefhebber van alles wat mooi was. Tegenwoordig zou hij zijn hart ophalen in de Kloosterstraat met haar talrijke antiekwinkeltjes. Zelf vond hij er een van de grootste schatten van zijn leven, zijn eerste vrouw Isabella. Hier lag het huis van haar vader, Jan Brant. Het pasgetrouwde koppel woonde een tijdje bij hem in. Ook de cartograaf en geograaf Abraham Ortelius woonde in deze straat.
De straat dankt haar naam aan de legendarische Sint-Michielsabdij, met tot 1124 de enige parochiekerk van Antwerpen. Rubens voltooide hier het altaarstuk Aanbidding door de koningen. De Fransen namen het mee en gaven het een ereplek in Louvre. Na Waterloo kwam het in het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten terecht.
