In 1912 oprichting van een nieuwe parochie toegewijd aan het Heilig Hart. In hetzelfde jaar werd gestart met de bouw van een meisjesschool waarvan het gelijkvloers werd ingericht als noodkerk. In 1934 werden de eerste stappen gezet voor de bouw van een nieuwe kerk, naar ontwerp van aannemer-architect A. Peynsaert (1893-1966). Recent onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat het ontwerp heel waarschijnlijk toe te schrijven is aan de Nederlander Alexander Jacobus Kropholler (1881-1973).
