De Kolenhaven is een zijdok van het Albertkanaal dat werd aangelegd voor het transport van steenkool. De Kolenhaven werd samen met drie andere kolenhavens tegelijkertijd met het Albertkanaal aangelegd. Voor de kolenhavens er waren, werd de steenkool per trein naar de Waalse staalindustrie gevoerd. In Beringen waren er daarvoor twaalf stand-bystoomlocomotieven. Vanaf 1937 begonnen de kolenhavens op volle toeren te draaien. Hoewel er nu geen mijnindustrie meer is, worden deze kolenhavens toch nog gebruikt, onder meer voor het verladen van ingevoerde steenkool voor elektriciteitscentrales.
