Le Kolenhaven est un quai secondaire du canal Albert qui a été construit pour le transport de charbon. Le Kolenhaven a été établi en même temps que trois autres ports à charbon lors de la construction du canal Albert. Avant l'existence des ports à charbon, le charbon était acheminé par train vers l'industrie sidérurgique wallonne. À Beringen, il y avait douze locomotives à vapeur de secours à cet effet. À partir de 1937, les ports à charbon ont commencé à fonctionner à plein régime. Bien qu'il n'y ait plus d'industrie minière aujourd'hui, ces ports à charbon sont encore utilisés, notamment pour le chargement de charbon importé pour les centrales électriques.
