Rond de 12de-13de eeuw zou Sint-Pieters-Kapelle nog Hunckevliet geheten hebben. Toen een gelovige vrouw een kapel ter ere van de heilige Petrus liet bouwen en er later een parochiekerk met die naam kwam, veranderde ook de naam van het dorp geleidelijk aan. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd het dorp praktisch volledig verwoest, maar nadien heropgebouwd, inclusief de Sint-Pieterskerk uit 1923.
