Het imposante gemeentehuis van Sint-Gillis doet nauwelijks onder voor het stadhuis op de Brusselse Grote Markt. Dat mag je misschien verwachten van de gemeente die vroeger ‘Obbrussel’ heette, vanwege de hogere ligging ten opzichte van de ommuurde stad.
Pas eind 19de eeuw verstedelijkt het landelijke Sint-Gillis. Tegenwoordig trekt hoog Sint-Gillis vooral gegoede Brusselaars en expats. De levenskwaliteit is er beduidend beter dan in de lagergelegen wijken. De Bosniëwijk in laag Sint-Gillis is zelfs een van de dichtstbevolkte en armste wijken van het land. Er wonen meer dan 38.000 inwoners per vierkante kilometer, zo’n vijf keer meer dan gemiddeld in het gewest.
Je fietst terug naar het centrum langs enkele toppers van laag Sint-Gillis zoals het Sint-Gillisvoorplein en het Moricharplein.
