Det imponerende rådhus i Sint-Gillis står næppe tilbage for rådhuset på den brusselske Grote Markt. Det kan man måske forvente af kommunen, der tidligere hed 'Obbrussel', på grund af den højere beliggenhed i forhold til den befæstede by.
Først i slutningen af det 19. århundrede urbaniseres det landlige Sint-Gillis. I dag tiltrækker højtliggende Sint-Gillis især velhavende brusselitter og expats. Livskvaliteten er betydeligt bedre end i de lavere liggende kvarterer. Bosniakvarteret i lavtliggende Sint-Gillis er endda et af de tættere befolkede og fattigste kvarterer i landet. Der bor mere end 38.000 indbyggere pr. kvadratkilometer, omkring fem gange mere end gennemsnittet i regionen.
