Das imposante Rathaus von Sint-Gillis steht dem Rathaus am Brüsseler Grand-Place kaum nach. Das kann man vielleicht von der Gemeinde erwarten, die früher 'Obbrussel' hieß, aufgrund der höheren Lage im Vergleich zur ummauerten Stadt.
Erst Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts urbanisierte sich das ländliche Sint-Gillis. Heutzutage zieht das wohlhabende Sint-Gillis vor allem wohlhabende Brüsseler und Expats an. Die Lebensqualität ist dort deutlich besser als in den tiefergelegenen Vierteln. Das Bosniëviertel im tiefen Sint-Gillis ist sogar eines der am dichtesten besiedelten und ärmsten Viertel des Landes. Dort leben mehr als 38.000 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer, etwa fünfmal mehr als im Durchschnitt der Region.
