Dit is één van de 5 groenpolen in de Gentse regio. Het Wonderwoud wordt gebouwd in opdracht van Natuur en Bos in samenwerking met de Stad Gent en de gemeente Lochristi. Het eerste deel werd geopend op 29 november 2024.
Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, was het ooit de bedoeling dat dit een vliegveld werd. De typische vorm ervan is nog goed te zien op kaarten en luchtfoto’s.
Sommigen kennen het misschien van de visvijver, het executieoord of de zandontginning.
In het naastliggende executieoord werden in WO II verzetslieden geëxecuteerd. Het terrein vertoont veel bulten en bunkers waar vroeger munitie in werd bewaard. De herdenkingsplaats is beschermd als landschap.
