Gelegen in de Calestienne omvat de site de Gouffre de Belvaux evenals de vallei van de Lesse, die net stroomopwaarts ligt, waar de loop van de rivier ruw en woelig is. Het geheel heeft een uitzonderlijke belangstelling op geologisch en geomorfologisch vlak, met name vanwege het grote aantal zichtbare karstverschijnselen. De bodem van de vallei wordt bezet door een oeverbos dat verschillende zeldzame soorten herbergt, zoals de gladde iep (Ulmus laevis) en de valse renoncule (Anemone ranunculoides). Het habitat wordt vaak bezocht door de duikstaart (Cinclus cinclus) en de oevers van de Lesse zijn lokaal gunstig voor de nesteling van de ijsvogel (Alcedo atthis). De ongewervelde fauna omvat verschillende zeldzame soorten slakken.
