In 1961 rijdt Karel Van Wijnendaele voor de laatste keer mee in de volgkaravaan van de Ronde van Frankrijk. Van Wijnendaele moet de Ronde noodgedwongen vervroegd verlaten, hij keert ziek terug naar huis. Later dat jaar, op 20 december, overlijdt de 79-jarige duizendpoot.
