Veurne was van oktober 1914 tot begin 1915 zo goed als de hoofdstad van België. Terwijl de regering vanuit Le Havre opereerde, had het leger zijn Grote Hoofdkwartier in het stadhuis van Veurne. Toen de stad zelf onder vuur kwam (bekijk de foto’s van de Markt maar even) besloot men het hoofdkwartier naar Houtem te brengen, zo ver mogelijk va het front weg, maar wel nog op Belgisch grondgebied.
De koning liep af en aan in Veurne, andere staatshoofden en militaire leiders deden Veurne aan terwijl de bevolking probeerde recht te blijven onder de druk van troepen en vluchtelingen uit de rest van het land. Kinderen verloren hun scholen aan troepen, historische gebouwen verloren hun dak.
In het oude Stadhuis is een belevingscentrum dat je alle aspecten van de oorlog in de stad laat zien.
