De stadshallen hebben tijdens de oorlog verschillende functies. Eerst bieden ze onderdak aan Belgische reservisten en vluchtelingen. Tijdens de bezetting doen ze dienst als gevangenis en zelfs als garage en keuken.
Brugge is erg geliefd bij de Duitse soldaten. Getuige daarvan zijn de ontelbare foto’s die ze van de Markt nemen. Er speelt ook regelmatig een Duitse fanfare en militaire parades brengen vertier. Aan de ingang van het belfort staat een krantenkiosk voor de Duitse soldaten. Officieren brengen hun tijd door in de tot boekhandel, bibliotheek en leeszaal omgevormde cinema. Of ze gaan eten in het Brugse officierenrestaurant.
Na de bevrijding brengen koning Albert, koningin Elisabeth en prins Leopold een incognito bezoek aan Brugge. Later, op 25 oktober 1918 worden ze er op de Markt officieel verwelkomd.
