Het Albertkanaal verbindt de haven van Antwerpen met Luik, via steden als Herentals, Geel, Hasselt en Genk. Zo is het ook een verbindingsweg tussen de Schelde en de Maas en speelt het een belangrijke rol voor de binnenscheepvaart en voor ons drinkwater. Dat laatste wordt erg zichtbaar bij de drinkwaterproductie van water-link in Oelegem.
