Dit oorlogsmonument staat op het binnenplein van het Hotel de Ville.
Het Altaar van het Vaderland, opgericht op de binnenplaats van het stadhuis, is een werk van de Brusselse beeldhouwer Frans Huygelen (1870-1940) dat op 23 augustus 1927 werd ingehuldigd in aanwezigheid van Prins Leopold.
Dit monument is een eerbetoon aan de 674 gefusilleerde burgers, de soldaten en gedeporteerden uit Dinant, en de 1200 Franse soldaten die tijdens de gevechten op 15 en 23 augustus 1914 werden gedood.
