Dit monument staat voor de kerk in Hertsberge. Het herdenkt de slachtoffers van de beide wereldoorlogen.
Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog is er veel Duitse militaire activiteit in Oostkamp en Hertsberge. Dat heeft alles te maken met de gunstige ligging van de gemeente. Zowel het kanaal Gent-Brugge, de spoorlijn Brussel-Oostende als de steenweg Brugge-Kortrijk garanderen een vlotte bereikbaarheid. De relatief geringe afstand tot het front is een bijkomende troef. De talrijke kastelen zijn een rustplaats voor tienduizenden Duitse frontsoldaten.
Voor het verhandelen en het transport van militair materiaal en munitie worden Vlaamse arbeidskrachten en krijgsgevangenen ingezet. Oostkamp telt maar liefst vijf Duitse vliegvelden. Kort na de bevrijding worden ze door de Belgische luchtmacht en door onze koning gebruikt.
