Het huidige gemeentehuis wordt in de volksmond smalend het “Cremlin” genoemd naar de burgemeesters Jan en Pieter De Crem. Door de oorlog in Oekraïne wil men af van de associatie met het Kremlin in Rusland. Voor het oude gemeentehuis van Aalter, dat gebouwd werd in 1844, staat aan de Boomgaard (einde wandeling) wordt een nieuwe bestemming gezocht als horecazaak. Aan de buitenkant van het gebouw mag echter niets gewijzigd worden. De parking voor de deur wordt dan deels heringericht tot een terras.
