Dit is het vijfde tafereel van de werken van Joseph Gillain, bekend als Jijé, aan de dreef naar de kapel van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Haurt.

Het toont Maria bij de de stervende Jezus aan het kruis.

Een veelvoorkomende smart die afgebeeld wordt is de Piëta (Italiaans: Pietà), een afbeelding van de Heilige Maagd met het lichaam van haar overleden Zoon op schoot.
