Van december 1878 tot oktober 1880 hokte Vincent Van Gogh in de Borinage waar hij zelfs in april 1879 zevenhonderd meter afdaalde in de steenkoolmijn van Marcasse. Van Gogh woonde in bittere armoede in Petit-Wasmes om de hoek van de Charbonnage de Marcasse.
Marcasse herinnert niet enkel aan Van Gogh. Een monument in een nis van de mijn herdenkt de 17 mijnwerkers die hier om het leven kwamen bij een gasontploffing op 13 januari 1953. In 1958 viel het doek voor Marcasse. De 2 schachtbokken werden gesloopt, maar de rest van de fabrieksgebouwen (die trouwens niet dateren uit het Van Gogh-tijdperk, maar uit 1920) bleven overeind.
De site is privé-domein, maar je kan er regelmatig terecht voor geleide wandelingen of evenementen rond Van Gogh in de Borinage, zie vangoghborinage.canalblog.com.
