From December 1878 to October 1880, Vincent Van Gogh lived in the Borinage, where he even descended seven hundred metres into the Marcasse coal mine in April 1879. Van Gogh lived in abject poverty in Petit-Wasmes, around the corner from the Charbonnage de Marcasse.
Marcasse is not just a reminder of Van Gogh. A monument in a niche of the mine commemorates the 17 miners who died here in a gas explosion on January 13, 1953. In 1958 the curtain fell on Marcasse. The 2 shafts were demolished, but the rest of the factory buildings (which, by the way, do not date from the Van Gogh era, but from 1920) remained standing.
