Wist je dat de Gotthardpas al van in de oudheid bekend was, maar dat die zelden werd gebruikt tot het begin van de 13e eeuw, omdat men de turbulente Reuss moest doorwaden, meestal sterk gezwollen door gesmolten sneeuw aan het begin van de zomer. Die stooomt in de smalle Schöllenen Gorge (de Schöllenenschlucht), onder Andermatt. De pas werd reeds in 1236 toegewijd aan de Beierse Sint Gotthard van Hildesheim.
