Aphrodite is een oude Griekse godin die wordt geassocieerd met liefde, schoonheid, plezier, passie en voortplanting. Ze werd gesynchroniseerd met de Romeinse godin Venus. De belangrijkste symbolen van Aphrodite zijn mirten, rozen, duiven, mussen en zwanen. De cultus van Aphrodite was grotendeels afgeleid van die van de Fenicische godin Astarte, een verwant van de Oost-Semitische godin Ishtar, wiens cultus was gebaseerd op de Sumerische cultus van Inanna. De belangrijkste cultcentra van Aphrodite waren Cythera, Cyprus, Korinthe en Athene. Haar belangrijkste festival was de Aphrodisia, die jaarlijks midden in de zomer werd gevierd.
